Repository widgets

JISC funded a small piece of work to produce some repository related widgets that could be used on platforms such as Netvibes and iGoogle. ICO3 carried out the work for us and I am pleased to say that there are now a number of widgets available.

You can read about the widgets and add them to your netvibes and iGoogle page at: http://www.rwidgets.co.uk/wiki/doku.php

Or to see them in action, go to the netvibes universe:  http://www.netvibes.com/rwidgets#General

My favourite of these is the SherpaRoMEO widget, which works really well.

ICO3 will be doing some work to get community feedback on these widgets so if you are interested in helping ICO3 to review the widgets or if you just want to express an opinion, post a comment below or contact me directly http://www.jisc.ac.uk/contactus/staff/andrewmcgregor.aspx. I’d be really interested to hear your opinions and ideas.

The purpose of this work was to explore the possiblities of repository related widgets in this area, not to produce polished tools so I think that there is plenty of room for further development both of these widgets (I’d really like the sword one to have a drag and drop interface) and of other widgets related to repositories and the information environment.

    Hi Andy
Exciting stuff – but not having much luck adding the widgets to my Igoogle: “Not Found” all round when using the Google-Add buttons on the Rwidgets Dokuwiki. Has anyone else got them working on Google?
    Cheers
    Richard

Hi Richard – they are not working for me now either. They were working previously. I have reported the error and hope it will be fixed soon.

These links are fixed now and all should be working correctly. Perhaps the best method is to click on the direct link which then gives you the option of either adding to Netvibes or Google. I am currently looking for user testers of these products so if you want to volunteer please contact either myself or Andy.

Looking a lot better now in Igoogle. Note that if you want the widgets to go under a specific tab, best to have that tab selected in Igoogle first.

Am now in complete repository information meltdown :) but will play with them over the next few days and send any feedback to Dave and Andy.

The SWORD widget is throwing lots of errors – I’m trying to connect to our installation of intraLibrary v3.0 which I have achieved using the SWORD desktop client. Can anyone help? Thanks.

    Hi Nick

I have emailed a couple of people to try and find out what is causing these errors.

    Hi Nick,

If you could give us a ring or email us we would really like to help on this one. Were pretty sure that your server is returning invalid XML but we don’t know why and it could be something else going on with Intra-Library that we had not anticipated.

Could you email us a Service Document, Username and Password to login with (privately) so we can see what happens at our end and run a series of tests? Email us or ring us:

All those links to Google should work now.

If anyone is still watching this post…

I’ve just added the JULIET widget to iGoogle but it doesn’t seem able to connect.

Also added the ROAR widget which does work but doesn’t seem to have the United Kingdom in the country drop down – I’ve been through it several times and I’m pretty sure it’s not there.

    Thanks
